Please mark your calendars for an exciting collaboration between History, the Newark Earthworks Center, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Department of Art on September 23and 24, 2026.
Ceramicists Richard Zane Smith, Carrie Lind, and Alicia Rezendes, who represent the Wyandot, Cherokee/ Shawnee and Delaware (Lenape) traditions and are involved in many forms of cultural and linguistic revitalization, will talk about their work.
We will discuss how they incorporate historical forms (including Hopewell and Fort Ancient influences), what pottery tells us about Indigenous life and history, and the role of art in modern American Indian culture and nationhood.
