Prints for this exhibition were created in a hands-on art making workshop at the Octagon Earthworks, led by Newark Earthworks Center experts Marti Chaatsmith and Megan Cromwell, along with Ohio State’s 2025–26 Artist Laureate, Kate Shannon.
The cyanotype is a simple photographic process that uses sunlight and water to produce vivid blue images. During the workshop, participants learned about the Octagon Earthworks before exploring the grounds to create place-based prints inspired by Hopewell culture.
By combining image-making with the study of historical works, Associate Professor Shannon aims to help participants connect with the history of photography and gain a deeper appreciation of its impact on cultural memory.
Shannon teaches a variety of courses, including photography, digital imaging and expanded media. Her digitally manipulated photographs have been exhibited across the United States. She recently showcased her curation of 19th-century American photographs at Ohio State’s Rare Books & Manuscripts Library and is now working on a creative project supported by a Funds for Artists grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council that examines these historical items using digital tools.
Once the exhibit closes the artists' prints will be mailed to them.
